The Marketing Departments hosts HU EMPOWER 2020!

This past month, Howard University’s Marketing Department held their annual department summit, HU EMPOWER! HU EMPOWER was presented by Amazon Web Services and stood as the leading partner for the premier entrepreneurship pitch competition for Howard University students. The pitch competition encourages the entrepreneurial spirit of Howard’s social engineers, innovators, and creative thinkers. Finalists for this competition had the opportunity to present their impactful business ideas, and ultimately gain access to funding, mentorship, technology, resources and a grand prize of $10,000!

Pictured to the left are the HU EMPOWER 2020 Pitch Competition winners, Rameesh Abrego and Durham Moten! Christopher C. King, CEO of We are Marcus stated, “One of my goals has been to help support the pipeline of diverse talent however I can. With that said, I’m so proud of these young men. They beat 7 teams in a pitch competition for $10k sponsored by #AWS. Their app, Reversed, makes online exchanges easier and saves money. They are brilliant founders. Judging is a lot harder than it looks by the way. All the teams were very impressive!”

A segment of this summit also included a 2-day panel discussion with some leading professionals such as, McKeever “Mac” Conwell, Amber Simmons and Darryl Perkins, just to name a few. Entitled “Entrepreneurship in Entertainment”, this panel discussion allowed professionals to discuss the challenges, successes and lessons learned within their career journeys in the entertainment industry. With many laughs, much transparency and even more note taking, we can conclude that the students really enjoyed the guest speakers.
