Students Behind The Magazine

In 2019, the responsibility of producing the School of Business (SOB) magazine transitioned to students, creating an immersive learning experience within the Marketing elective, Publication Management, taught by Dr. Dana Williams-Johnson.

This course provides hands-on experience in real-world marketing, allowing students to conceptualize, design, and publish the annual SOB magazine. The class is structured into specialized teams based on individual talents and expertise, fostering a collaborative and dynamic environment:

  • Editorial Team: Develops compelling written content, curates articles, and ensures high-quality storytelling. Members sharpen their writing, editing, and research skills while maintaining the magazine’s voice and integrity.
  • Design Team: Crafts the visual identity of the magazine through graphic design, layout composition, and branding. Students gain expertise in Adobe Creative Suite and other design tools to create visually engaging pages.
  • Social Media Team: Focuses on digital marketing strategies, content creation, and audience engagement. Team members develop and execute social media campaigns to promote the magazine and drive contributions from students, faculty, and alumni.
  • Web Team: Builds and maintain the website, upload new stories, and make sure viewers can easily explore the lastest content. By combining design, organization, and technology to help showcase the work behind the magazine.
  • Hybrid Team: A versatile group that bridges editorial, design, and social media, ensuring smooth collaboration and workflow between teams.

Throughout the semester, students apply marketing strategies to craft email campaigns, develop promotional content, and expand the magazine’s reach. Each class is meticulously planned to meet deadlines and execute tasks leading up to the print date.

This course is more than just a class—it’s a creative incubator where students refine their writing, graphic design, marketing, editorial and web skills while producing a publication that represents the essence of the School of Business. By participating, students gain real-world marketing experience, making them industry-ready before graduation.
